A multistate Salmonella Javiana outbreak traced to fresh jalapeño

Pepper Trail: One Sinaloa Grower, a Continent of Salsa

How a single Mexican pepper farm rippled through guacamole, burritos, and salad dressing shelves from Texas to Vermont.

A multistate Salmonella Javiana outbreak traced to fresh jalapeño peppers has, over the course of August 2026, cascaded from a single Sinaloa, Mexico grower into recalls spanning grocery aisles, restaurant chains, and salad-dressing lines across the country. The common thread: Coast Citrus Distributors, the U.S. importer that first flagged and recalled the peppers, and a chain of downstream manufacturers who used them as an ingredient before anyone knew there was a problem.1

Coast Citrus’s own recall notice, filed with regulators, states plainly that the company is “no longer importing from the common grower” tied to the contamination.2 That single sourcing decision by one distributor forced a wave of separate, independent recall announcements by companies that never touched a raw pepper field but had unknowingly built the tainted jalapeños into finished products.

The Downstream Recalls, Company by Company

  • Taylor Fresh Foods (Salinas, California) — recalled finished products containing jalapeños, including diced jalapeños and a rice-and-bean burrito sold under the Hannaford label, distributed to Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.3
  • NatureBest Precut & Produce LLC (Texas) — recalled pico de gallo, stuffed mushrooms, and soup mixes containing jalapeños, sold under the NatureBest and H-E-B labels in Texas and Louisiana.4
  • H-E-B — recalled more than 35 prepared items, including guacamole, ceviche, shrimp cocktail, cheese spreads, and Mexican street corn, while stating current in-store products were unaffected.5
  • Salata Dressings (Houston) — recalled its Jalapeno Avocado Dressing distributed to Texas H-E-B locations.5

“Taylor Fresh Foods is not aware of any reported illnesses linked to its products containing jalapeños.”

Taylor Fresh Foods’ own press release, issued from its Salinas headquarters, frames its recall as a direct response to notification from its supplier rather than any finding of contamination in its own facilities — the company says it acted the moment it learned Coast Citrus was pulling the pepper lot, and has since shifted to an alternative grower for future orders.3

Restaurant chains supplied directly by Coast Citrus also acted independently of any regulator directive. Chipotle Mexican Grill switched jalapeño suppliers beginning July 20, and QDOBA stopped serving jalapeños altogether on July 28, according to statements each company issued.6 Salad chain Sweetgreen also pulled jalapeños from its menu, where they appear as an ingredient in two of its salad dressings.6

What To Check At Home

  • Fresh jalapeños purchased loose from Texas or Louisiana grocers between early July and early August 2026
  • Diced-jalapeño or jalapeño-containing prepared foods bearing the Hannaford, H-E-B, or NatureBest label within the recall windows above
  • Salata Jalapeno Avocado Dressing bottles distributed to Texas H-E-B stores
  • When uncertain of a product’s source, the manufacturer guidance is simple: discard rather than consume
